Fix A Leak : Product Information

FIX-A-LEAK is a blended concentrated material designed to seal leaks in virtually any material.  It can be applied for leaks in the shell and works equally well in plumbing.

  • Can be applied for leaks in the shell and works equally well in plumbing
  • Will form a permanent seal Use 1 quart per pool up to 22,000 gallons.
  • Do not use in excess of 1 quart per 5,000 gallons of water
  • Shake Well Before Using
  • See instructions on bottle

Directions For Use - Hot Tubs

Minor drips or leaks usually require less product (8 ounce bottle).  Depending on the severity of the leak, a 32 ounce bottle may be required. This would allow you to begin by using 1/3 of the bottle initially and if more product is required you can add the additional amounts.

  1. Determine water loss in a 24 hour period by measuring the water level drop in that period and select the amount of FIX-A-LEAK required.
  2. Fill spa/hot tub to the original level and mark the water line.
  3. Remove filter cartridge or other filtering devices. For sand filters, place the filter valve on Recirculate.
  4. Ensure to shake bottle well. Note: Placing the bottle into a container of hot water, prior to shaking, will ensure product is properly mixed.
  5. With pump(s) running, slowly add the FIX-A-LEAK through the skimmer or in front of any suction intake.
  6. Recirculate continuously for 6-8 hours then shut system off.
  7. Check water level the following day.
  8. If level remains the same, the leak has stopped.
  9. Allow 48 hours before resuming operation

We do not recommend using the spa until the leak is fixed and the remainder of FIX-A-LEAK is either filtered or drained from the spa/hot tub.  If the leak has slowed but not totally stopped, you may add more FIX-A-LEAK to increase the strength of solution already in the spa/hot tub. You can then repeat steps 5-8 to further seal. IMPORTANT: Before doing so, stir the FIX-A-LEAK in the spa/hot tub with a soft broom to get existing solution back into suspension.

Important Notes

The product requires pressure to ensure it is impacted into the area of the leak.

Leaks created by a crack in the pipe, in all probability, will be sealed. However, the leak may re-occur due to vibration, which in turn, will migrate in size re-creating the leak. Also, what may occur over time is that, the expansion and contraction of the pipe may break the seal. In either case, a manual repair may be required.

Most spa/hot tubs are foam insulated and, when saturated with water, will greatly delay the cure time of FIX-A-LEAK. It would be best to drain the spa/hot tub and immediately wipe down the shell surface with a damp cloth to remove any residual of FIX-A-LEAK. Allow 3-5 days before refilling. In most cases, this will allow the product to cure.

Even if the foam insulation looks dry on the outside, the interior of the foam will remain wet or damp for many months.

In most cases, FIX-A-LEAK should be effective in sealing your leak for 1–2 years.

Important Cold Weather Notes

We do not recommend draining the spa/hot tub with prolonged freezing weather. If not drained properly, in all probability, you will end up with a cracked pipe causing a bigger problem.  We would suggest filtering out the product with your cartridge filter. Run the spa/hot tub for a few hours then remove the cartridge filter and immediately rinse with warm or hot water to remove any FIX-A-LEAK residue.

Repeat this procedure a few times to ensure the product is removed from the spa/hot tub.  This should get you through the winter with a 4-6 month seal.  The treatment may have to be repeated in warmer weather when you can safely drain the spa/hot tub.

Directions For Use - In Pools

Bypass FILTER MEDIA before adding FIX-A-LEAK to water. Sand filters: set filter valve to recirculate. Other types: remove cartridges DE elements from filter tank. Then proceed to circulate through empty tank

With pump running, add FIX-A-LEAK slowly through skimmer or in front of any other suction intake.

After adding FIX-A-LEAK adjust suction to main drain. If this is not possible, the vacuum cleaner could be used alternatively, simply by placing the vacuum in deepest part of pool and connect to normal vacuum connection.

FIX-A-LEAK is very heavy and will sink to the lowest point rather quickly.  It must be stirred back into suspension, either manually using a pool broom or mechnically with a automated pool cleaner every 4-6 hrs. during circulation of water.

Continue to recirculate water until the leak has stopped.

Mark level of water in pool and check for 2-3 days to determine if the leak has stopped.

After the leak has stopped and given the proper time to cure (24-48 hrs.) you may return to normal filtration. Sand Filters: Set filter valve to filter and resume normal operation.  Backwash out unused FIX-A-LEAK as required.

Other Types: Reinstall filter into tank and resume operation.  Rinse out unsed FIX-A-LEAK from filter as required.

*NOTE* Never let cartridges of DE elements be left to dry before they are cleaned.

Treatment can be repeated if necessary.
Suction Leaks are usually known by air mixed with the water at the return fittings. In most cases suction lines only leak water when the filter pump is shut off. Normal Circulation will simply draw FIX-A-LEAK away from the leak and if the pump is shut off the material will simply not get to the leak. You must reverse the flow of water, to force the material through the leak under pressure. Preferably 5-10 psi. untill the leak has stopped. When this has been achieved, gradually increase pressure to 15-25 psi. to insure a proper seal.

Very Important

After sealing a suction leak "it" is a must to leave suction off the repaired line for no less than 48 hrs. FIX-A-LEAK requires time to cure and harden.

Miscellaneous Leaks: If you suspect a leak around fittings inside the pool (such as return fittings) lights, skimmer(s) or steps, etc. Shut down pump. Apply FIX-A-LEAK directly to the leak using a squeeze bottle, similar to a ketchup bottle. Allow a minimum of 48 hrs. to cure before starting up circulation.

Precaution

Keep Out Of Reach Of Children. Can cause severe eye and skin irritation. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Avoid contamination of food. Rinse empty container thoroughly with water and discard it.

First Aid

In case of contact, immediately flush eyes or skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. For eyes, contact a physician. Remove and wash contaminated clothing before reuse. If swallowed, drink milk, egg whites, gelatin solution. If these are not available, drink large quantities of water. Call a physician immediately.
